Pug Training

Pugs' unique and adorable characters and faces make them such a favorite breed for family pets.  Regarding training a pug, it can be a little harder to train, like most other toy dogs.  However, with patience, practice and time, pug training can be done. Certainly, you need to be proactive and patient while training your new pug puppy.

Whether or not Pug training will be successful depends a lot on how much your pug desires your approval.  By nature, Pugs strife to please their owners and will do everything to to gain approval, which makes pug owners very fortunate.

Using crate training invariably works with pugs. Purchase a good size crate and make it seem like your pug's home so they can sleep in it. Since your pug will not soil his bedding, this can be an effective way to get your
Pug to "hold it".  It's important to not, however, that you should not force your pug to stay in the crate for longer than his bladder will last as this would be cruel.

pugEnsure the cleanliness around the crate and put in a toy into it.  Occasionally, wire cages are used instead of crates as well.  When your pug has held it all day, ensure that you show your appreciation by taking him out immediately and then rewarding him when he does his business on the designated area.

Based on your free time and convenience, make a decision on indoor or outdoor potty training. You could always train your pug in both indoors and outdoors. They are good for a cold day, rainy day (but not on a very hot day) or when you go on holidays.

Walk them in a garden on a leash or simply train them to go out whenever they feel like. If you are staying indoors, use the paper for potty training a pug. Select an area of the house, put some papers on the floor and take them there after feeding or when you notice they want to do their business.

Pugs have really weak bladder and it is quite normal for puppies to pee every two hours. You need to be certain that you are around to take your pug out at these intervals or that you provide him with a designated place where it is alright to go.

Do not shout at your pug or get too excited while training. Remain smooth and calm. Usually, they have better control on their system at 6 months.

They may try to trick you with their little innocent actions, but you must be firm with them. Snacks and food should be given to at only at the right time. Because unnecessary feeding only mean they need to use the potty more often.

pugPugs always respond to your words and actions as they learn in their training. Expressions like 'potty time' or' go to your corner' should do the job and they will eventually learn what is expected of them when they hear these words.

Potty training a Pug is not that difficult.  Therefoer, more time and patience will be required than some other breeds.

However, if you are still frustrated about your Pug's bad stinky habits, then these 7 tips will help you transform your pug's behaviours in less than 30 days, if you apply them consistently throughout your Pug's training programme:

1) Start training your pug puppy at early stage. Old dogs can learn new tricks, however, the earlier your pug is introduce to proper house-training, the quicker your pug will learn.

2) Communicate with your pug puppy. Talk to pug like how you would talk to your children, when they were toddlers.  Pugs are able to sense and receive both your verbal and non-verbal communication. For example, when your pug misbehaves, you could simply say "no" with a deep angry voice.   By doing this, your Pug will sense it. You must then, show him what the correct actions are. These will help you Pug to distinguish between the right and wrong actions.

3) Reward your Pug for listening to your command. Give him the credit by padding his forehead or around his neck. Give your pug a variety of rewards. It could be his favourite food, toy or treat.

4) Increase the frequency of rewards to your Pug. Research showed that the more often a puppy is rewarded, the faster and more efficient the learning process becomes. Look for instances to reward your Pug through praises or treats.

For examples, if your Pug is lying down quietly and minding his own business, praise him. Look for opportunities to praise, not to punish.

5) Feed your Pug regularly, especially when it is at puppy stage. Keep you Pug puppy hydrated throughout the day. When times allow, bring your Pug for a walk and say, "Go potty" just before he is eliminating. Pat him to give him the encouragement.

6) Never punish your Pug! Teach your Pug using positive and motivational methods. Be proactive rather than reactive. This means, when your Pug is doing well and behaving properly, pro-actively reward your Pug. On the other hand, do not sympathize with your Pug's bad behaviors.

7) Play with the Pug! Pug loves playing. It is vital that whenever practising any obedience training and upon finishing, you should enjoy a play time with your pug. You can run or play tug-of-war with your pug during play time.
