Pug Grooming
It’s not difficult to groom pugs. Pug coats are short and don't be matted and tangled like long-haired dog breeds. It is recommended that your pug has plenty of good food and clean water. Nutrient-rich food will keep your pug’s coat shiny and his eyes bright. Also ensure your pug gets sufficient exercise and fresh air.
Brush the pug's coat daily with a natural bristle brush to remove loose and dead hairs. Don't use wire brushes on a pug. Start brushing your Pug when he is just a pup so that he becomes used to the process.Pugs don't require frequent bath, simply wiping the pug with a wet cloth to wipe off some dirt and is recommended to keep a pug clean.
A bland shampoo, without medications or alcohol, works well for Pugs. Before starting the shampooing, have all required articles handy and available. Have on hand the shampoo, wash cloth, several turkish towels, a small jar with absorbent cotton, cotton balls, and a small jar of petroleum jelly or small bottle of baby oil.
Before starting the bathing, gently place a little wad of cotton in the dog's ears to keep the soap and water from entering the ear canal.
When you bathe your pug, start by putting cotton balls in his ears to keep out shampoo and water. You can clean your pug's face with a wet washcloth without soap on it. Be certain to cautiously take off any goo that may be on your pug's eyes and to clean the fold above its nose.
After you bathe your pug, you can either towel dry it or use a blow dryer set to the low setting. After drying your pug, brush his coat to make it shine. You should also clean your pug’s ears when he gets a bath. Simply use a soft, wet cloth to wipe the ear flaps. Never dig down inside your pugs ears. If you suspect they may be waxy or dirty down inside, you should have your pug's vet clean them. If you find a brown material in your pug's ears, this could be caused by ear mites and you should get them treated as soon as possible.
Nail trimming is also a crucial part of grooming your pug. You can buy nail clippers to do this or nail files. Be very careful when clipping your pug's nails, you don't want to cut into the "quick". If you aren't comfortable trimming the nails yourself, the vet's office may offer a nail trimming service. If you walk your pug on a hard surface such as a sidewalk, the nails will be worn down naturally saving you the trouble of worry about them.
Also check for cuts, infection, or ear mites. Occasionally, an accumulation of moist brown material may indicate ear mites. Fleas also can be a problem for Pugs during the warm weather months. These pests may cause serious damage to the ear if allowed to go unchecked. Check your local pet shop for a variety of commercial flea products. |
