Pug Care
Before buying a Pug, you have to realize that there are special care requirements. There are many specific health care concerns to Pugs; therefore, you have to make sure that you take time to put the extra care effort to take care of your pug.
Coat Care
Pug’s fur: Brush your Pug’s fur with a brush that has stainless steel bristles once a week in order to help cut down on the fur in the house and keep your Pug’s fur look shinny. However, Pugs still shed his fur! In the summer, when you brush your fawn Pug, it looks like he's smoking as the fur is flying off.
Brushing Pugs every day helps reduce the amount of fur in the house. Pugs love being brushed. You should brush in the direction the fur grows without pressing down too hard on the brush. That’s why you need to use smooth, even and gentle strokes.
As mentioned in the Pug grooming section, many people bath their Pugs every other week to once per month. It is recommended that you do every other week in the summer and once per month in the winter.
Face Wrinkle Care
This is one of critical components of Pug care. The folds and crinkles on a Pug's face are prone to collect dirt, as Pugs spend plenty of time with their face in their food bowl, outside in the yard, etc. In addition, the face wrinkles collect dried tears and mucous. Therefore, it is necessary that you clean those facial folds to ensure that they don't develop any infections or fungus. Make sure that you clean the wrinkles regularly. It’s also recommended that you start cleaning the folds when your Pug is a puppy so that he will get used to it.
Use a non-alcoholic/non-scented baby wipe. You must hold the Pug firmly and gently run the wipe in the folds above the nose and below the eyes. Continue until the wipe is clean after running through the wrinkles. Then, apply a very thin layer of Vaseline inside the fold above the nose the give some protection and healing to this sensitive area. It’s recommended that you do this once per week or once every other week at the latest.
Toe Nails
Trimming the Pug's nails is also needed a careful care. It’s recommended that you trim his nails when your Pug is deeply asleep. To avoid cutting too far down on the nail, clip just the curved part of the nail. Your Pug may need his nails trimmed every two to three weeks, as Pug nails that grow too long can cause bleeding and breakdown of the pasterns on the paws, which will cause your Pug pain when walking.
Ears
Also use a baby wipe or a damp cloth. Gently wipe clean only the areas of the ear that you can see, don't go too deep. Clean the ears as frequently as they appear dirty.
Teeth
You can ask your vet to brush your Pug’s teeth, or do it yourself. Again, you’d better start this when your Pug is a puppy so as to make it a habit. Choose a dog toothbrush and dog toothpaste from your pet shop.
